The entire country of Thailand was shocked by the Phoenix boat accident that occurred last month. While many families are enjoying their stay in hotel near cartoon network in Pattaya, an unfortunate incident fell upon the Phuket’s coast as 47 tourists of Chinese nationality lost their lives. Only a month has passed but the tourism industry of the kingdom is already feeling the negative impact of the accident as it demands a heavy toll.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand, they made some changes with the tourism figures expected for the last half of this year. It is now estimated that only 5.1 million Chinese will come to visit the country. The number is lower by 670,000 than the previous estimate. Its impact on the financial status of the tourism is hard to calculate but it will be a huge one.
The ministry said that every Chinese tourist that visited Thailand during the first half of the previous year was able to spend $1,553 in average. Using this number as an estimate, the tourism industry could lose approximately $1.04 billion as a result of the boat accident.
As a whole, the country was able to earn $56 billion from the revenue brought by tourism in the past year. For this year, authorities expect that they will be able to earn as much as $62.95 billion in tourism revenue.
Despite the unfortunate happening, the tourism officials are positive that the number of arrivals for this year will be higher compared to that of last year even considering the drop in Chinese tourists. In 2017, the country welcomed a total of 9,805,753 tourists from China. After the revision, the ministry published that they will expect around 11 million travellers from China will come to Thailand this year. For the first half, they have already welcomed 5,931,153 Chinese nationals.
Phuket will be hit the most because the drop in Chinese tourists will focus in the area but there are still many bookings in hotel near cartoon network which goes to show that Pattaya and other cities will remain a magnet for Chinese travellers.
